Jay L. Phillips (Jay.Phillips@emwnlaw.com) focuses his practice in corporate law, intellectual property, estate planning, and general transactional law. His legal expertise is enhanced by a robust life sciences and public policy background cultivated through academic and professional experiences. Before entering the legal field, Jay earned a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural and Medical Biotechnology from the University of Kentucky. He also gained valuable insights into policy-making through roles as an intern in the Kentucky Legislature and a Graduate Fellow at the Council of State Governments. These experiences provided him with a unique perspective that seamlessly integrates science, policy, and law.

During law school, Jay deepened his knowledge across various legal disciplines through hands-on roles. As a Graduate Fellow in the University of Kentucky’s Office of Technology Commercialization, he conducted ground-level assessments of the University’s intellectual property. He also worked with a government contractor conducting Medicaid audits and compliance research. These opportunities allowed Jay to build a diverse and well-rounded skill set in corporate law, intellectual property, and public policy.

Jay is equally passionate about community service and leadership. Jay is a proud Eagle Scout and served as a mentor through the First Tee program. At the University of Kentucky, he distinguished himself as a campus leader, serving as president of the Appalachian Law Caucus, the Election Law Society, and was named the 2022 J.W. Patterson Senator of the Year by the Student Government Association. Currently, he serves in numerous leadership roles within local civic organizations and as Vice President of Rotaract of Lexington. Whether professionally or personally, Jay prioritizes service, leadership, and making a meaningful impact in his community.
